Mets Daily Farm Report, May 6, 2014: Syndergaard rains down on Tacoma

GAME ONE

LAS VEGAS 7, TACOMA 5 (Box)

This was the completion of yesterday's rain shortened game in which Wilmer Flores homered and Rafael Montero walked three and struck out six over five innings.

GAME TWO

LAS VEGAS 2, TACOMA 3 (Box)

Taylor Teagarden homered in the top of the ninth to give Vegas the lead only to see Jeff Walters choke it away in the bottom of the ninth. Three consecutive singles followed by two consecutive walks is how it ended. That's pretty bad. Noah Syndergaard, however, was pretty good, striking out eight in 5.2 innings of work. I watched the last three innings of his start and, despite some trouble in the fifth, thought he looked terrific. When he locates his fastball it's a monster pitch with extreme velocity and downward plane. He was consistently dropping his curveball in for strikes, something I wasn't expecting but was thrilled to see. The change wasn't used as frequently but he did get a swinging strikeout with it. I saw a pitcher who could definitely get major league hitters out with regularity.

Double-A - Binghamton Mets (14-13)_____________________________________

BINGHAMTON 0, NEW HAMPSHIRE 5 (Box)

Matt Clark didn't know it at the time, but when he grounded out for the second out of the first inning and advanced Kyle Johnson to third base, it would be the closest the B-Mets would come to scoring all night. Tyler PIll pitched decently, allowing just one earned run (three total) over five innings. He walked one, struck out three, and gave up just three hits. Unfortunately for Pill, the B-Met bats did not come prepared to score one run, let alone three. Matt Reynolds was the lone bright light (as has been the case most of the season), going two for three with a walk.

• 2B Wilfredo Tovar: 0-2; Tovar has just three strikeouts in 82 plate appearances this season. That's ridiculous. Granted, he has just two walks, which is almost equally ridiculous. After Quintanilla's shenanigans last night and Tejada continued ineptitude, I think I'm in favor of replacing those two on the roster with a Flores/Tovar combo. It probably wouldn't be worse than what we've seen from the Q/Tejada duo.

Advanced-A - St. Lucie Mets (18-13)________________________________________

ST. LUCIE 5, CHARLOTTE 2  (Box)

The St. Lucie Mets finally got a well pitched game from Gabriel Ynoa, who held the Stone Crabs to just two runs over six innings. Brandon Nimmo went oh for three, lowering his average to just .363 (traid), but did walk twice. Jairo Perez continued his hot streak, going two for three with a double and a triple. Over his last ten games Perez has hit .395/.452/.711.

ROME 1, SAVANNAH 5 (Box)

Gavin Cecchini stayed hot with two hits and two RBI as he helped the Sand Gnats to their sixth win in their last seven. Dom Smith also added two hits, which now makes it six multi-hit games in his last ten. I'm happy to see some positive results but I'll reserve my excitement for when we get a positive scouting report to counter all the negative ones that have come in of late. That said, I'm encouraged by the walk and strikeout rates.
