Control was missing for a number of pitchers Monday.
Triple-A Durham Bulls (20-12)
Matt Andriese walked a career high five batters in Durham's 8-4 loss to Syracuse. One start after allowing a career high in home runs, Andriese showed an uncharacteristic lack of control, walking five and allowing seven runs on eight hits in 3.2 innings with a strikeout, and only 51 of his 94 pitches were strikes. The two actual relievers who threw for the Bulls combined for 3.1 scoreless innings, but when Robby Price made his second appearance on the mound this season, he allowed a solo home run.
Durham scored all four of their runs a half inning after Andriese was removed. Kevin Kiermaier led off the inning with a double and eventually came home to score. Later in the inning, Vince Belnome cleared the bases with a double, and while the tying runner did come to the plate that inning, they weren't able to even the score. Curt Casali was 2/3 with a double and a walk in his Bulls debut.
Double-A Montgomery Biscuits (18-13)
Victor Mateo rebounded from his last start and pitched well in Montgomery's 2-1 win over Jacksonville. He allowed a solo home run in the second inning that opened the scoring, but he got through the rest of his outing without much trouble, finishing with just the one run allowed on five hits and three walks in seven innings with nine strikeouts, tying a season high he set in an earlier start against Jacksonville. Andrew Bellatti struck out four in two scoreless innings and picked up the save.
The Biscuits only totaled five hits, but they made them count. They tied the game in the third inning with a two out rally that finished with a bases loaded walk to Cameron Seitzer. The eventual winning run came across in the seventh inning, this time with no outs. Alejandro Segovia led off the inning with a triple, and after Riccio Torrez replaced him as a pinch runner, Torrez came home to score on a single by Luke Maile. Segovia had two of Montgomery's five hits, the other of which was a double.
Class-A Advanced Charlotte Stone Crabs (15-16)
Alex Colome returned to action and wasn't very good in Charlotte's 5-2 loss to St. Lucie. With his suspension winding down, Colome began his rehab assignment well with two strikeouts in a 1-2-3 first inning, but the outing quickly went south. Two runs scored with two outs in the second, and he couldn't find the strike zone. The first run scored on a wild pitch, his second of the inning, and after a walk, the second run was singled home. He finished with the two runs allowed on two hits and three walks in two innings with four strikeouts, and 28 of his 47 pitches were for strikes.
Walking batters was a theme for Stone Crab pitchers, and Leonel Santiago and Parker Markel combined to walk six in seven innings of relief as the Mets tacked on a couple insurance runs. Triples played a role in both of Charlotte's runs that came in back to back innings. In the second, Kes Carter tripled with two outs, and Tyler Goeddel singled him home. Josh Sale led off the third with a triple, and Andrew Toles brought him home with a sac fly. Charlotte would get the tying run in scoring position three times over the course of the rest of the game but couldn't capitalize.
Class A Bowling Green Hot Rods (13-17)
Bowling Green staged a big ninth inning rally to beat South Bend 9-4. After the Silver Hawks scored an unearned run in the eighth to tie the game, the Hot Rods took advantage of some bad defense from South Bend when they scored five runs while sending 10 men to the plate. All five runs were unearned because of a pair of two out errors, but the Hot Rods still needed four hits to take advantage. Armando Araiza and Granden Goetzman each had RBI singles, and Oscar Hernandez delivered the big blow with a two run triple. Pat Blair made the first and last outs of the inning.
Bowling Green first got on the board with a three run second inning. After Ariel Soriano's run-scoring groundout, Juniel Querecuto drove in two more runs with a two out single. Even with the early run support, starter Jordan Harrison was in and out of trouble all game, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits and a walk in 4.1 innings with two strikeouts. Stone Speer struck out three and allowed an unearned run in 3.2 innings.
Star of the day- Mateo was by far the organization's best starter last night.
Goat of the day- Andriese's last two starts sure were out of character.
