The Miami Marlins topped the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-4 on Sunday afternoon. Giancarlo Stanton hit a pair of home runs and Jeff Baker's walk off double gave the Marlins another series victory.
Having come back down five runs in Saturday night's loss to the Dodgers, the Miami Marlins were confident they could win the rubber match and did so with a 5-4 walk off victory on Sunday afternoon.
Late offense sparks rally
On Saturday night, Miami's offense was solid and came back from a five run defecit. Facing Stephen Fife, the Marlins were able to put four runs on the board.
Giancarlo Stanton had a huge day at the plate, hitting a two run home run to center field in the first inning to give the Marlins an early 2-0 edge and going deep in the sixth for the second time on the afternoon.
After getting Saturday night off, Christian Yelich hit his second home run of the season with two outs in the fifth. The long ball has been the key to Miami's success on the current homestand, during which they have only lost one game.
Despite losing the lead in the ninth, a Jeff Baker RBI-double against Jamey Wright scored Adeiny Hechavarria to send the Marlins home with the series victory.
Jose Fernandez goes deep
After using several bullpen arms in an extra innings game on Saturday, Jose Fernandez provided the Marlins with a necessary extended outing, going seven innings and striking out 10. Fernandez did walk four but was able to make a pitch when he needed to.
A Hanley Ramirez RBI single and a past ball led to two Dodgers runs in the third, and a Carl Crawford sixth inning single tied the game at three.
Fernandez's ERA is now at 1.74 and remains among the best in the National League.
Bullpen can't hold lead
Closer Steve Cishek had worked in three consecutive games heading into Sunday's contest, and as a result, wasn't going to be called upon in a close game.
A.J. Ramos was asked to close the game with a one run lead, but after walking Chone Figgins to start the ninth, Ramos yielded an RBI double to Andre Ethier which tied the game at four.
Mike Dunn provided a scoreless inning in relief of Fernandez.
Miami begins a three game series with the New York Mets on Monday night.
