The speedy left fielder was slated to start for the first time in four games.
During batting practice today, Eric Young was hit in the face with a batted ball. Lucas Duda was taking his cuts, one of which ricocheted off a screen, nailing Young below the right eye. Here is the official statement from the Mets:
Eric Young Jr. was hitting [in] the batting cage. He was struck below the right eye when a ball bounced off the screen."
The latest from the Mets is that Young is heading to the hospital for x-rays. We'll update you as soon as we know the results.
After three straight games on the bench, Young was penciled into the leadoff spot in Terry Collins's starting lineup today, as the Mets try to salvage the final game of a so-far-miserable four-game series in Colorado against the Rockies. Juan Lagares, who was originally being given the day off, will start his fourth-straight game in center field for the Mets. Chris Young will slide over and play left field.
