What does the baseball world think of the Mets' signing of veteran starter Bartolo Colon?

Rumor has it that the Mets have agreed to a two-year contract with starting pitcher Bartolo Colon. Here are some reactions to the signing:

  • Marc Carig tweeted that the signing is a risk due to Colon's age and PED history but he can't blame them for taking that risk.
  • Adam Rubin passed along a couple of positive quotes from scouts.
  • Mets' beat writer Anthony DiComo says that the team only risked money with Colon's signing and would still have a full rotation in 2015 even if he falls apart.
  • Mike Puma reminds us that this contract is the largest contract that the Mets have given out to a free agent starting pitcher since Oliver Perez's infamous 3/36 deal in 2009. AHHH, STOP IT!
  • Matthew Cerrone of Metsblog likes the signing, even if it may be a somewhat needed overpay.
  • New Mets' outfielder Chris Young (presumably) tweeted about the signing. Young played with Colon in Oakland last season.
  • Dan Szymborski of ZIPS tweeted that the projection system values Colon at two years and $19.1 million. He also tweeted some near-age performance comps for Colon.
  • Eno Sarris writes at Fangraphs that Colon is an "unreliable workhorse" and though the deal looks like a good one, the righty has large risk markers.
  • Keith Law thinks that the signing is smart and that the Mets could have a "sneaky good rotation".
  • Jesse Spector thinks this deal shows that the Mets are headed in the right direction.
  • Finally, Kevin Burkhardt tweets that in signing Colon, the Mets did what they had to do.
