The Miami Marlins and New York Mets were probably quite weary from yesterday's doubleheader marathon. That must have been the case, because the only fresh people on the field today appeared to be starting pitchers Tom Koehler and Dillon Gee, who both looked fantastic in shutting down the opposing offenses.
Koehler racked up eight innings of shutout baseball, and he did so with five strikeouts and no walks to his name. Koehler held a one-hitter until two outs in sixth inning, when Eric Young Jr doubled. That was the only "jam" Koehler got into, as the Mets had only advanced one runner to second base on Koehler, who gave up three hits total. Koehler's five strikeouts came on 12 whiffs in 101 pitches, meaning he was having some dominant stuff throughout his eight innings. The complete control made this one of the best outings of any Marlins starter this year.
Unfortunately, Gee held the Fish down as well. He allowed six hits and two walks in his 7 1/3 innings, but he also shut out the Fish. His success, along with the Mets', came at the expense of the Marlins' poor performance with runners in scoring position. The Fish had multiple chances to get a runner home from second or third base but failed to do so; the team was 0-for-12 in those situations through nine innings, while the Mets were just 0-for-2.
The Mets ended up being the ones to break the glass ceiling. In 12th inning, they jumped on reliever Zach Phillips, who allowed two walks and a single to load the bases with no one out. The Marlins pulled the infield in and Ryan Webb came in and got two outs in the infield in clutch fashion. But the final hit, with the infield at normal depth, squibbed past Webb and was just out of the reach of Adeiny Hechavarria at shortstop. Travis D'Arnaud sent the fans home happy with a 1-0 Mets win. The Marlins will go home with yet another series loss in the books.
