Jayson Werth was 3 for 4 tonight in Citi Field with a home run (23) and two doubles (19,20) and the Washington Nationals' 34-year-old outfielder ended the night with the second-highest average in the National League at .328, which as of 11:00 pm EDT with Atlanta done for the night and Colorado still playing, had Werth 2nd in the NL behind only the Braves' Chris Johnson (.330 AVG) and ahead of the Rockies' Michael Cuddyer (.327; 0 for 1 in one at bat against the San Francisco Giants).

Werth was crushing pitches in New York tonight in the Nationals' 6-3 win over the Mets. Washington, as a team, has eight home runs, five in the series opener and three more tonight which might make the Mets question their decision to make their home more HR-friendly by moving in the walls. [ed. note - "I use that joke in tonight's podcast (linked below), just laugh again like it's the first time you're hearing it to be polite."] Werth's 3 for 4 night left him 15 for 35 with seven doubles and two home runs nine games into the month of September and he has a .328/.401/.548 line on the year now in the third year of his 7-year/$126M contract with the Nationals.

It wasn't all Werth, however. Two outs after Werth's second double of the night in the sixth, Wilson Ramos came through with an RBI single which drove in what ended up being the winning run, making it 4-1 at the time. When Drew Storen walked speedy Mets' outfielder Eric Young in the seventh, it was Ramos (with an assist from Storen's sped-up delivery) who came through with a huge caught stealing for the second out of the frame in what was then a one-run game. On the year, Ramos, who caught two of three would-be base stealers tonight has thrown out 12 runners in 42 attempts (29% CS%) which is league average and back where Ramos was in 2010-11 when he was talked about as a solid defensive catcher.

• AUDIO: Werth, Ramos, Ryan Zimmerman, Jordan Zimmermann, Denard Span, Dave Nichols from the District Sports Page, FBB's Doghouse and I talked about them all and more after the Nationals' fourth straight win tonight on Nats Nightly:
