Looking ahead, the Mets need bats if they're going to contend in 2014 and beyond. They're not terrible this year—at 4.05 runs scored per game, they're slightly below the MLB average—but will have to be better next season to contend.

This week's player meter covers Mets game from August 12 through 19.

Mike Baxter, OFWhen Baxter’s playing well, he’s getting on base, which he did plenty of over this stretch.
Andrew Brown, OFPerhaps the Mets should get more of a look at Brown down the stretch, as he hit .600/.636/.800 in 11 PA this week.
John Buck, CBefore taking his long-awaited paternity leave, Buck had an .820 OPS, one of his best marks of the season for the player meter. Now he’ll play backup to Travis d’Arnaud, though.
Marlon Byrd, RFThere were concerns that Byrd would slow down in the second half, but he’s done the opposite. This week, the guy hit .400 with 3 home runs and a 1.188 OPS.
Travis d’Arnaud, C--It’s been 3 games, and d’Arnaud has 5 walks. He’s yet to get his first major league hit, but that’ll happen soon enough.
Ike Davis, 1BPre-demotion Ike reappeared this week, as he hit just .167/.310/.333.
Wilmer Flores, 3BHe’s not exactly killing it up there, but Flores has looked like capable hitter in the big leagues thus far and put up a .732 OPS this week.
Juan Lagares, CFHe barely hit, but he made up for at least some of his awful slash line with superb defense in center field.
Daniel Murphy, 2BMurphy’s season-long struggles at the plate continued. Does anyone remember the Irish Hammer?
Omar Quintanilla, SSHe continues to not hit and has looked particularly slow on some plays in the field lately. The Mets need a shortstop for next year.
Anthony Recker, CRecker actually had a 2.333 OPS (in 4 plate appearances) before getting sent to Vegas to clear a spot for Buck to back up d’Arnaud.
Josh Satin, 1BHe may have only hit singles, but Satin’s .300 average and .364 OBP were acceptable for his role.
Justin Turner, IFNo trolling this week for Turner.
David Wright, 3BThere hasn't been much in the way of updates on Wright, who's out with a hamstring injury.
Eric YoungUndoubtedly a speedster, it’s hard for Young to utilize his best skill when he’s only getting on base at a .281 clip like he did this week.
