Mejia has been suffering from elbow pains recently. He aggravated the injury during Saturday's game against Padres, necessitating his early removal from the game. While the Mets had planned for Mejia to have surgery to remove bone chips in his elbow during the offseason, It's possible that Mejia will receive the surgery now, ending his season.

Mejia, 23, had just joined Zack Wheeler and Matt Harvey as promising young pitchers in the Mets rotation. He has made five starts since being called up in late July, compiling a 2.30 ERA with 27 strikeouts compared to just four walks. Until the arrival of Wheeler and the advent of Harvey, Mejia had been among the top pitching prospects in the Mets' system.

Burke, 30, pitched in 28 games earlier in the season for the Mets, his first major league action since 2009. He posted a 4.66 ERA and 1.69 WHIP and finished 10 games for New York. In 26 games for Las Vegas this season, Burke has a 4.72 ERA.
