You probably don't even know who Charles Basford is, let alone know that he was missing. Drafted in the 37th round of the 2012 MLB Draft, Basford wasn't much of a prospect to begin with. He premiered with the Staten Island Yankees after joining the organization, pitching to a 5.18 ERA with an 8.1 K/9 in 24.1 innings of relief. He pitched two innings for Staten Island in the season opener then got traded to the Houston Astros for ex-Mets prospect Fernando Martinez.
Whatever happened to Luke Murton, Eduardo Sosa, Austin Krum
Since making the move to the Tri-City ValleyCats, where he plays alongside the 2013 first overall pick Mark Appel, he has a 2.31 ERA in 11.2 innings pitched. Meanwhile, Martinez has hit .325/.394/.554 in 94 plate appearances as organizational filler. This won't be a trade anyone will be following going forward, but we'll see if anything comes of it for either party.
Cody Johnson was drafted in the first round of the 2006 MLB Draft by the Atlanta Braves and he will likely never see the majors. After five years in Atlanta's system, where his best season by far was in 2007 when he hit .305/.374/.630 in his second go around in rookie ball, he left the organization. He went to the Yankees and played the 2011 and 2012 seasons in High-A Tampa and Double-A Trenton. In 2013 he made it to the Triple-A level for the first time, but hit a measly .167/.297/.259 in 64 plate appearances at the age of 24.
The Yankees released him in early May and he quickly signed with the Atlantic League's York Revolution. He hit .268/.358/.506 in his first taste of Indy ball and played with the likes of Eric Patterson, Mark Teahen, ex-Yankee Brett Tomko, and just missed playing with former 2010 Yankees farmhand Zack Segovia by four days. He stuck with the team until mid-July when he left and signed with the New Jersey Jackals of the Canadian-American Association. Even first round picks can end up as a baseball nomad.
Shaeffer Hall was drafted by the Yankees in the 25th round of the MLB Draft and after a 2012 season where he had a 3.67 ERA in 164.1 innings in Double-A he was converted into a reliever in 2013. The 25-year-old lefty pitched to a 3.32 ERA in 19 innings before he was surprisingly released in early May. He didn't have much hope in professional baseball at that point, but he was able to catch on with the Oakland Athletics organization.
He was given another shot as a starter with the High-A Stockton Ports, but has only managed an unfortunate 5.61 ERA in 51.1 innings and nine starts. Judging by his 6.0 K/9 across five seasons, he has never been a high-strikeout pitcher, but allowing 10.3 hits per nine innings is not going to keep him in pro ball for long.
