The 28-year-old has discomfort in his pitching elbow.
Josh Edgin will undergo an MRI for discomfort in his left elbow. The 28-year-old was not throwing as hard as usual recently, so the news does not come as a huge surprise. After bouncing around levels in the Mets' system in 2013, Edgin made a nice return to the big leagues last year with a 1.32 ERA in 27.1 innings.
In the event that Edgin is hurt for a significant length of time this year, the Mets' left-handed relief situation would be at least a little iffy. Scott Rice, recovering from surgery himself, is in camp on a minor league deal, and Rule 5 pick Sean Gilmartin figures to have a shot at making the team's Opening Day roster, too. Dario Alvarez and Jack Leathersich are the other two left-handed relief pitchers currently in major league camp.
Of course, even if Edgin were completely healthy, there was no guarantee he would repeat the success he had with the Mets last year. But an already-thin group of left-handed relief pitchers might get a little thinner.
