Rockies co-owner says Tulowitzki trade is not happening

Charlie Monfort told the New York Post that Colorado's star shortstop isn't going anywhere.

Trade for Tulo! Say no to Tulo! Many Mets fans have strong opinions about whether or not the Mets should trade a large package of prospects to the Rockies in exchange for game-changing shortstop Troy Tulowitzki and his enormous contract. No matter where you stand, the point is moot if Tulowitzki's big bosses in Denver insist on keeping him.

When asked about the possibility of a Mets/Rockies trade involving the star, Colorado co-owner Charlie Monfort said "it's not happening."

"I can't speak for him, but yeah, we want him," Monfort said. "I think he's strong and he's worked hard and he'll be back. He'll be Tulo of old."

If the Mets were as confident as Monfort that Tulowitzki would be "Tulo of old" this season, it might be easier to get a deal done. As it stands, the hip injury that Tulowitzki has sustained is just one of many issues blocking a deal. New York's stinginess with both its prospects and its budget is a big obstacle. Even if the Rockies were to throw in cash, that would just cost even more precious prospects from the Mets.

Despite Monfort's stance, circumstances may change during the season. Tulowitzki's performance, the Mets' performance, and the shortstop's growing unhappiness with the Rockies could all make for a more appetizing trade landscape in July.
