The 37-year-old reliever was very effective out of the bullpen in 2014 and will receive an invite to major league spring training.

The Metshave re-signed right-handed reliever Buddy Carlyle to a minor league contract with an invite to major league spring training. This isn't a particularly exciting signing, but Carlyle pitched very well in 2014 and could provide depth in the bullpen this season.

A journeyman pitcher who hadn't seen the majors since 2011, Carlyle had a career renaissance in 2014, posting a 1.45 ERA in 31 innings over 27 appearances. He had a stellar 5.6 strikeout-to-walk ratio, a 0.90 WHIP, and left an incredible 87.3 percent of runners on base.

While the deal won't put fans in the stands, it's a very low-risk move that could improve the team. If Carlyle can continue to pitch effectively and leave runners on base, he'll be a valuable asset in middle relief. If he regresses closer to his career 5.13 ERA, there are several other options available to take his place in the Mets' 2015 bullpen.
