Mets free agency: Mets, other teams showing interest in Asdrubal Cabrera

The veteran middle infielder is still on New York's radar.

The Mets have seen their options at shortstop dwindle over the past few weeks. First the Yankees traded for Didi Gregorius, then the Astros signed Jed Lowrie. It doesn't appear that New York is going to make a serious run at Jung-Ho Kang, either.

Asdrubal Cabrera is still available, though, and Jon Heyman says that the Mets are interested. The Giants, Athletics, Cardinals, and Twins are also teams said to be after the 29-year-old who finished last season with Washington.

Although Cabrera is still relatively young and was once considered a big part of Cleveland's future, his game has deteriorated over the past three seasons. In 2014, he hit just .241/.307/.387 with a strikeout rate around 20 percent, the highest of his career. In his free agent profile of Cabrera, Colby Conetta did not recommend the veteran for the Mets. The major issue is Cabrera's defense. Even though his offensive numbers were down in 2014, he still hit 14 home runs for some decent shortstop pop.

But Cabrera has never been a great defensive shortstop and played mostly second base after he was traded to the Nationals. If the Mets do make a deal for Cabrera, they'll be asking for him to hit a lot in order to make up for his defensive shortcomings.
