The Mets were doomed by one bad inning from the Jon Niese, as two infield dribblers to start the top of the fourth opened the door for all the runs Miami would need. Carlos Lee hit an RBI single, Giancarlo Stanton contributed a long sac fly, and John Buck hit a damaging two-out two-run double. The Mets tried to claw back with a solo home run from Daniel Murphy to lead off the bottom of the fifth, and executed another two-out rally, capped by a Josh Thole RBI single. That rally ended, however, when Jon Niese was allowed to hit for himself, and it was the last threat they would mount. The offense could manage just one baserunner the rest of the way, even against a Miami bullpen that fostered appearances by Carlos Zambrano and Heath Bell.
