The New York Mets will not be eating (or moving) the final guaranteed year of outfielder Jason Bay's albatross four-year, $66 million contract, Mets GM Sandy Alderson tells Andrew Marchand of ESPN New York.
"Certainly, there are times when it is appropriate to eat a contract," Alderson told ESPN New York "There are other times when it is not. Jason Bay is not going anywhere, nor is his contract."
Since signing the four-year pact with the New York Mets, Jason Bay has been injury riddled and declined at an alarming rate. The 33-year-old has given the Mets close to nothing this year and is batting just .154/.248/.285 in 149 plate appearances over 40 games. The team is well aware of Bay's lack of production and that's why he is now in a platoon role for the team.
As bad as Bay has been, the team plans on living with his unmoveable contract for another season. He is owed $16 million next season and that is the last guaranteed year on his deal. There is a $17 million vesting option for one more season, but Bay is unlikely to reach that mark given his abysmal performance.
