The Mets are looking into the two right-handed sluggers to fill one of their remaining needs.
According to Mark Carig, recently non-tendered outfielders John Mayberry Jr. and Kyle Blanks are on the Mets' radar. Both Mayberry and Blanks would fill the need for another right-handed hitter on the Mets' bench, and both have spent time at first base as well.
The soon-to-be 31-year-old Mayberry has done the majority of his damage against left-handed pitching, with a .269/.324/.533 line against southpaws over his six seasons in the majors. Mets fans are familiar with Mayberry's powerful bat and as his long, lanky strides in the outfield from his days with the Phillies.
The 28-year-old Blanks's platoon splits are not nearly as prominent, but his .244/.342/.409 line against lefties in only 295 plate appearances suggest that he could still be a useful platoon partner. Blanks has battled myriad injuries over his career, logging only 260 games in six seasons with the Padres and Athletics. Like Mayberry, Blanks possesses a ton of power along with questionable outfield defense.
Either six-foot-six slugger would give the Mets some sorely needed pop off the bench as well as a potential platoon partner for Lucas Duda. They could also be looked at as a backup plan should the oft-injured Michael Cuddyer resume his residency on the disabled list.
