Two ex-Mets made news today in the East Bay as Oakland attempts to bolster their first base depth.
Days after designating former Met Ike Davis for assignment, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that Pirates have dealt the 27-year-old first baseman to the Oakland Athletics for international signing money.
Davis, who was designed for assignment by the Pirates to open a roster spot for prospect Jameson Taillon, has displaced another former Met in the acquisition: Andrew Brown, acquired from New York in October, has been designated for assignment himself to make room for Davis.
In parts of five seasons in New York, Davis hit .240/.336/.423 with 68 home runs and 415 strikeouts in 1,741 plate appearances. The Mets traded him to the Pirates last April in exchange for Zack Thornton and Blake Taylor. Though Davis started out well in Pittsburgh, he finished the season hitting .235/.343/.378 while Lucas Duda, whom the Mets chose to keep at first base instead of Davis, hit .253/.349/.481 and was one of the offensive bright spots in a lineup that struggled through most of the season.
