There's not much in the way of Mets news this morning, but the team is obviously still looking for a shortstop and a left-handed relief pitcher this winter.
John Lannan, who signed a minor league deal with the Mets before the 2014 season before making the bullpen, struggling mightily, and getting sent down to the minors, has signed a minor league deal with the Rockies.
Around the National League East
Here's a scary thought: If the Nationals were to trade either Doug Fister or Jordan Zimmermann, they could turn to signing Max Scherzer. Sure, a Scherzer contract might not look great several years down the road, but he's been one of the best pitchers out there over the last couple of years.
Around Major League Baseball
It sounds like Pablo Sandoval will sign somewhere soon. Talks between him and the Red Sox are pretty hot and heavy, as the team reportedly offered him a five-year, $95 million contract. Don't count out the Padres just yet, though. And the Giants are still in the mix, of course.
The Twins, who passed on hiring Frank Viola as their new pitching coach, have hired Neil Allen—who pitched for the Mets from 1979 until he was traded during the 1983 season with Rick Ownbey for Keith Hernandez—for the gig.
Also, the Twins won the bidding for Korean left-handed pitcher Hyeon-Jong Yang, who Steve Sypa profiled here a couple weeks back.
Dinger specialist Wily Mo Pena is a free agent and is looking to come back from Japan to Major League Baseball.
