The last time Dillon Gee faced the Braves, he gave up a walk-off two-run homer in the ninth to Freddie Freeman. Surely, another last at-bat win couldn't befall Gee again...right?
Gee carried a no-hitter through six innings, but another ninth-inning rally for the Braves and a spectacular catch broke his chances at another win with a 2-1 victory over the Mets at Citi Field.
In the fourth inning, Justin Upton's attempt at a sliding catch of Marlon Byrd's line drive turned into a triple. Ike Davis singled on the very next pitch from Julio Teheran for a 1-0 Mets lead.
The way Gee was pitching, one run seemed insurmountable. 12 of the 21 outs he recorded were groundouts and he didn't allow a hit until Freeman's single leading off the seventh. That hit started a potential rally as Atlanta managed to load the bases with another single and a hit batsman, but Gee put out the flames.
Gee gave way to the bullpen and hoped Bobby Parnell could seal the deal in the ninth. Brian McCann and Evan Gattis, however, smacked consecutive singles to start the inning. One out later, a passed ball moved up both runners. The infield played back, willing to concede the tying run and Chris Johnson obliged, scoring Gattis on a groundout. The often-reliable Parnell hadn't blown a save since June 4 and with Uggla at third, gave up Reed Johnson's single to put the Braves in front.
Even with a one-run lead, drama ensued in the bottom of a very wet ninth inning. Craig Kimbrel plunked John Buck with one out and walked Omar Quintanilla with two outs following a lengthy battle. Pinch-hitter Justin Turner drove Kimbrel's 1-0 pitch into the left-center gap, but that's where Jason Heyward was running and he laid out for a game-saving catch to end the ballgame.
For your viewing pleasure, here's Heyward's grab.
