The Mets lose an absolute heart-breaker.

Jacob deGrom certainly wasn't flawless tonight, but he was efficient. The Mets young starter dealt 90 pitches over 6.2 innings and was generally very good, despite allowing eight baserunners and botching a coverage at first. deGrom was backed up with some run support as Lucas Duda singled to bring in two runs, but it was all the Mets could muster and the Pirates would tie it up in the bottom half of the inning after deGrom botched a coverage at a first.
The real story of this game came late, however. The Mets were unable to take a lead in the ninth after Travis d'Arnaud singled on a flukey ball that struck Mark Melancon's shin, which brought Juan Lagares to third. In the bottom half of the frame, Mejia was able to shake a lead-off single to get to the tenth. In the tenth, Mejia allowed a leadoff single to Josh Harrison who stole second, which warranted a failed challenge from Terry Collins. Harrison would then get caught in a rundown, where he seemed to be clearly out of the basepath twice, but neither the second or third base umpire made a call which sent Collins into a frenzy. Mejia would find his composure and work his way out of the jam. The Mets had their hopes busted in the bottom of the eleventh when Jordy Mercer brought Clint Barmes in on an RBI double.
