The 25-year-old catcher raked in a brief stint with Triple-A Las Vegas.
The Mets announced this evening that Travis d'Arnaud is on his way to New York to rejoin the Mets in time for Tuesday's game against the Oakland Athletics. The 25-year-old catcher—acquired by the team with Noah Syndergaard, Wuilmer Becerra, and John Buck in exchange for R.A. Dickey, Josh Thole, and Mike Nickeas after the 2012 season—was sent to Triple-A Las Vegas earlier this month after struggling at the plate in his young major league career.
Before going 0-for-1 and leaving tonight's game early to leave for New York, d'Arnaud hit the cover off the ball in fourteen games with the 51s. He hit .444/.483/.926 with six home runs in 58 plate appearances, numbers that stand out even in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League.
Of course, d'Arnaud has not yet proven he can hit major league pitching. In 257 plate appearances with the Mets, he has hit .180/.271/.273. The Mets wanted him to get his swing right in Las Vegas when they sent him down, and the numbers make it look like he did.
With d'Arnaud back in the fold, the Mets will have to decide between demoting Anthony Recker or Taylor Teagarden to make room on the roster—assuming they don't needlessly carry three catchers.
