Meet the Mets

The Mets beat the Marlins with great pitching and good hitting yesterday afternoon in Miami. Jacob deGrom led the way with seven shutout innings, and Jeurys Familia and Jenrry Mejia threw a scoreless frame apiece to finish the game. The Metsies got big hits from Chris Young, David Wright, and Lucas Duda to score four runs in the win.

The Mets were none too pleased with a pair of plays at home plate on Friday night, both of which helped the Marlins beat them, and Terry Collins expects a must-slide rule to be implemented for plays at the plate in 2015.

Pitching prospect Matt Bowman spoke to Newsday about his mental approach on the mound and learning to trust his catchers when it comes to calling pitches.

Defensive wizard Juan Lagarescontinues his rehab today with the Double-A Binghamton Mets, which makes it sound like he should be back sooner than later.

Jeremy Hefner expects to throw in games this season. Like Matt Harvey, he had Tommy John surgery last year. While he seems unlikely to supplant anyone in the rotation, more depth never hurts.

Mets minority share holder Steve Cohen might be forced to sell his stake in the team, says the Post. And if you hadn't noticed, Curtis Granderson's been doing pretty well lately.

Granderson isn't alone, either, as David Wright has been on fire on the road trip.

The Daily Stache thinks the Mets and Yankeesmatch up nicely for a trade. And Rising Apple looks ahead to the trade deadline to see where the Mets could look to improve.

Greg Prince thinks it might have been a good omen that Jacob deGrom got his first victory of the year on the first day of summer. Sounds good to me.

Friend of the site Marc Carig, Mets beat writer for Newsday, shared a touching piece about his sister, who passed away ten years ago yesterday.

Around the National League East

Considering the schedule, things went about as well as possible for the Mets in the division yesterday. The Phillies lost to the Cardinalssnapping their winning streak. And the Nationalsbeat the Braves in a game that would have helped the Mets pick up ground on a rival no matter how it ended.

Around Major League Baseball

The Mets aren't the only team experiencing growing pains with baseball's new rules this year. A blown call in Oakland was the latest hiccup.

In the wake of Tony Gwynn's death, former major league pitcher Dirk Hayhurst thinks Major League Baseball should take action and get chewing tobacco out of the game.
