The Miami Marlins were unable to score again, this time against a lesser pitcher in Jacob deGrom. Miami's offense was shutout and a good Tom Koehler effort was wasted.
The Miami Marlins were shut out by the New York Mets for the second time in three games, but this time it was not by a future dominant starter like Zack Wheeler. This time it was Jacob deGrom who whipped the Marlins' offense, striking out seven Fish while walking three and shutting them out through seven innings of work. Miami got very little offense going all game despite getting eight baserunners off of deGrom.
The Fish had some opportunities. In the fourth inning, Giancarlo Stanton got aboard on an error by David Wright, but then ran into an out trying to advance on pitch in the dirt. The Marlins would come to regret the out, because two pitches later, Casey McGehee drove a double deep and off the wall in center field that would have surely scored Miami a run. The team had a few other two-baserunner chances and opportunities with runners in scoring position, but despite Stanton's efforts (he reached base three times, twice on error, once on a double), the Fish scored no runs.
Meanwhile, it was a good effort by Tom Koehler for the Marlins. He bounced back after a couple of late-start collapses and went seven innings, giving up just the two runs and striking out eight Mets. He had a similar start to deGrom, but he was unfortunate to clump his baserunners a bit more. A two-out hit by David Wright and walk by Lucas Duda led to the first RBI hit by Chris Young, while a sixth-inning collapse led to multiple runners and a David Wright RBI single, but not more than that. Lucas Duda added on with a two-run homer in the ninth against Chris Hatcher.
Miami will look to split the series tomorrow afternoon with Anthony DeSclafani on the mound.
