Everyone lost today.

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs lost to the Nashville Sounds (Brewers), 2-1.

It was a good start for Chris Rusin, but he took the loss anyway because he didn't get any support. Rusin allowed two runs on four hits, including a solo home run in the second inning, over seven innings. He struck out five and walked only one.

The Cubs temporarily tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the seventh when right fielder Brett Jackson tripled and scored on a Jonathan Mota sacrifice fly. Jackson was 2 for 3 and Mota was 1 for 2.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies lost to the Birmingham Barons (White Sox), 2-1 as well.

It was also a great start for Joel Pineiro, although he didn't talk the loss like Rusin did. The only run Pineiro allowed was a solo home run in the seventh inning. Overall, he allowed one run on three hits over seven innings. Pineiro struck out two and didn't walk anyone.

Hunter Cervenkagot the loss when he allowed a run in the top of the ninth. Cervenka allowed one run on one hit and two walks over 1.1 innings. Cervenka fanned two.

Tennessee got their only run in the fourth inning when third basemanKris Bryant double to lead off the inning and he scored two batters later on a double by first baseman Dustin Geiger. Bryant was 2 for 4 and Geiger was 1 for 3 with a walk.

Daytona Cubs

A ninth-inning comeback fell short as the Daytona Cubs lost to the St. Lucie Mets, 4-3.

Starter Felix Pena allowed only one hit over his five shutout innings. He walked one and struck out one. Also, Jeff Samardzija has nothing on Felix Pena. Pena has allowed one or fewer earned runs in each of his ten starts this season. His record is 1-5 with a 1.41 ERA.

Jose Rosario relieved Pena in the sixth and blew any chance of Pena picking up a win. Rosario allowed four runs on three hits, including a three-run home run, in the sixth, the only inning he pitched. Rosario walked two and struck out one.

Daytona trailed the game 4-1 heading into the top of the ninth. They loaded the bases with one out and after Lance Rymel struck out, shortstop Marco Hernandez hit a two-run single to get the D-Cubs to within a run. But then right fielder Pin-Chieh Chen struck out to end the game.

Hernandez was 1 for 4. Center fielder Albert Almora was 2 for 4 with an RBI double in the first inning.
