The Mets and Phillies played their second 14-inning game in a row. Thankfully, the Mets won this time.

The Mets and Phillies once again played a 14-inning, 5+ hour, excruciating baseball game. Except this time, the Mets won. David Wright singled home Ruben Tejada in the top of the 14th inning to give the Mets a 5-4 lead, and Carlos Torres pitched a scoreless bottom half of the frame to end it. Thank goodness it's over and, more importantly, that the good guys won.

In addition to Wright, the Mets' heroes today included Jacob deGrom, Tejada, and Buddy Carlyle. deGrom struck out 11 in 6.1 innings of work. He dominated for six innings but faltered in the seventh, when he allowed a three-run home run to Ryan Howard. Still, it was a great outing for young deGrom, who induced an impressive 16 swinging strikes in 101 pitches, good for a rate of 16% well above the 9% league average. Tejada was on base five times, going 3-for-4 with two walks and -- wait for it -- a home run! He raised his OPS from .579 to .638. Carlyle arrived from Las Vegas just before the game and pitched three scoreless innings, giving the overtaxed bullpen a bit of a breather.

We'll see if the Mets and Phillies can give fans a conventional nine-inning, three-hour game Sunday at 1:35 pm.
