The Miami Marlins defeated the New York Mets 3-0 on Tuesday night. Henderson Alvarez pitched a complete game and the Marlins were able to get on the board early against Bartolo Colon.
Having swept the Atlanta Braves at home last week, the Miami Marlins were optimistic heading into a three game series against the New York Mets. With a 3-0 shutout victory over the Mets on Tuesday, the Marlins won the three game series and improved to 7-1 on the homestand.
Facing Bartolo Colon, the Marlins were able to take a quick 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Giancarlo Stanton added an RBI-double and Casey McGehee drove in a run with a single to right center field against the veteran right hander.
McGehee's second RBI single of the night in the fifth pushed the Marlins' lead to three runs, which was plenty for starter Henderon Alvarez.
Alvarez, after giving up four runs in a six inning outing against the Braves, was dominant in his second complete game of the season. While he gave up six hits, Alvarez also struck out seven and didn't walk a batter. His offspeed pitches were working well, and his sinker remained down in the zone, evident by the 12 ground balls he recorded.
New York had the opportunity to build off of a Juan Lagares double in the fourth and a two out rally in the sixth, but Alvarez was helped by the double play ball and the ability to throw strikes consistently.
Miami left a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the eighth, but Alvarez was able to close the game without trouble in the ninth.
The Marlins will go for the sweep on Wednesday afternoon.
