Mets Player Performance Meter: Pitchers, Week 3

Aside from a changing of the guard at the back of the bullpen, the Mets had a pretty good week on the mound.

Three weeks into the season, the Mets' pitching staff is looking decent. With a 4.01 ERA, its starters are right in the middle of the pack at 16th in Major League Baseball. And the bullpen's 4.55 ERA isn't spectacular, but it does rank 21st, just behind—believe it or not—the Braves' bullpen. April stats are fun!

This week's player meter covers the team's three-game sweep of the Diamondbacks on the road and the weekend series with the Braves at Citi Field.

Bartolo Colon, RHPA three-run, seven-inning start isn’t anything particularly special, but it was encouraging to see Colon pitch much better than he did in his previous start.
Jeurys Familia, RHPFamilia made just one appearance and gave up a run on two hits in the process. And he never made it in to the Mets’ fourteen-inning game yesterday.
Kyle Farnsworth, RHPNamed the Mets’ closer yesterday morning, Farnsworth didn’t allow any runs in three appearances.
Dillon Gee, RHPGee threw seven scoreless innings with 3 strikeouts and no walks. He now has a 3.71 ERA and 5.03 FIP on the season.
Gonzalez Germen, RHPComing into the week, Germen had been very, very good, but he coughed up four runs in four innings. Here’s hoping he bounces back as the Mets play a game in each of the next seven days.
John Lannan, LHP--Lannan didn’t pitch this week before getting sent down to Triple-A Las Vegas, but he accepted his assignment and will report there.
Daisuke Matsuzaka, RHP--Daisuke Matsuzaka, dominant extra-innings reliever? Sure! After stumbling a bit in a one-inning relief appearance on Saturday, Matsuzaka threw three scoreless against the Braves in extras yesterday.
Jenrry Mejia, RHPMejia threw five scoreless innings as the Mets blew out the Diamondbacks. He left that start early because of a blister, but he’s on track to make his start tonight against the Cardinals.
Jon Niese, LHPNiese gave up just a run in six innings and struck out seven. By his rate stats, he’s looking a lot like the Jon Niese we saw in 2012, and that’s a good thing for the Mets.
Scott Rice, LHPRice pitched just 1.1 innings in three appearances, but his one-pitch outing yesterday induced an inning-ending double play off the bat of hottest-hitter-on-the-planet Freddie Freeman.
Carlos Torres, RHPTorres was excellent once again this week, allowing only a run in 5.2 innings of work with 5 strikeouts and a walk.
Jose Valverde, RHPJose, your home run rate, woof!
Zack Wheeler, RHPWheeler has shown some good signs lately, but he still had a 3.65 ERA with 9 strikeouts and 6 walks in 12.1 innings over a pair of starts this week.
