The team announced Abreu will join the team on Monday.

The Mets might not have signed Jose Abreu to play first base this winter, but the team announced this evening that veteran outfielder Bobby Abreu will join the team on Monday. As the Mets noted, Abreu was hitting .395 with a home run in nine games with the Triple-A Las Vegas 51s.

Abreu last played in the big leagues in 2012, posting a .242/.350/.342 slash line between his time with the Angels and Dodgers. Though he used to hit for power, that aspect of his game had mostly disappeared by 2011.

In order to do add the 40-year-old, presumably to pinch hit, the team will have to send someone from its major league roster down to the minors. And with thirty-nine players of the 40-man roster, the Mets don't have to make a move there, though they could transfer Bobby Parnell to the 60-day disabled list to clear a spot whenever necessary this year.
