Angels win their sixth game in the alternate red jersey (including three in a row). Trout, Pujols, Ibanez, Conger, and Stewart go deep to bring the Angels back to .500 on the season.
Still don't believe in the power of the alternate red jersey?
Angels supplied plenty of power today, opening up the scoring with back to back to back HRs by Mike Trout, Albert Pujols, and Raul Ibanez in the first inning. This was the first time the club has hit 3 HRs in a row since July 2009. Erick Aybar would knock in a bases clearing triple past a diving Eric Young in LF to score Ian Stewart and Hank Conger in the 4th inning to make it 6-1. Conger would add his 2-run HR in the 6th to increase the lead to 9-2. 3B Ian Stewart, who got the start in place of David Freese, launched his into orbit in the 8th off RP, and former Opening Day starter, John Lannan. The 17-hit parade, 11 for extra bases, was on early and often as every starter finished with at least 1 hit and 1 run scored (a first since 2002).
On the pitching side of the ledger C.J. Wilson was sharp, scattering 6 hits over 7 innings allowing 2 ER while striking out 9 in 116 pitches. He had a couple moments where his attempt to field a ball cost him a double-play ball and a kick save attempt booted a playable ball into a base hit for the Mets but otherwise was locked-in all afternoon. Former Angel Bartolo Colon struggled on the mound surrendering 9 ER, including 4 HRs, over 5 innings as a gassed Mets bullpen as the Angel batters were all over his first pitch fastball. Jepsen pitched a scoreless frame in the 8th inning and newcomer Yoslan Herrera took over in the 9th and put up the final zero to end the game and bring the Angels back to .500 on the season.
At this rate, ditch the home white and road gray uniforms. The Angels are getting it done in the alternate red jersey which might end up being teams formula for success this season.
