Mets Player Performance Meter: Pitchers, Week 1

Jenrry Mejia and Jose Valverde were among the Mets' best pitchers over the course of a tough first week of the season.

Six games into the season, the Mets' pitching staff hasn't exactly gotten off to a hot start. The team's 4.75 ERA and 4.25 FIP each rank 24th in baseball. The starting rotation has been better, as its 3.82 ERA is far better than the bullpen's third-worst-in-baseball 6.75 ERA. There have been some bright spots, however, so let's get to the meter.

PlayerLast WeekThis WeekComment
Bartolo Colon, RHP--In his Mets debut, Colon struck out four and walked none but gave up three runs in six innings, including a pair of dingers. A cromulent start to the season if there ever were one.
Jeurys Familia, RHP--The hard-throwing youngster was charged with two runs in each of his appearances. The first came on Opening Day, though bad luck on batted balls was as much to blame for that outing as anything.
Kyle Farnsworth, RHP--Through three appearances, Farnsworth has given one run with two strikeouts and one walk in 3⅓ innings. A better-than-average season from the veteran would be a pleasant surprise in the wake of the Bobby Parnell injury.
Dillon Gee, RHP--In each of his first two starts, Gee has been very good for several innings before hitting a wall. With nine strikeouts and three walks in fourteen innings, he should be just fine so long as he’s not left in the game too long.
Gonzalez Germen, RHP--In 4⅓ innings, Gonzalez German Germen had six strikeouts and just one walk to go with a 2.08 ERA for the week.
John Lannan, LHP--The Long Island native has surrendered four runs in just one inning of total work over two appearances.
Jenrry Mejia, RHP--Let’s ignore the walks, which would be a problem if they remained at 7.5 per nine innings, because Mejia looked excellent otherwise against the Cincinnati Reds on Friday night.
Jon Niese, LHP--Charged with two runs in 5 ⅔ innings, Niese was mostly effective in his season debut against the Reds yesterday.
Bobby Parnell, RHP--The Mets’ closer came in with a one-run lead on Opening Day, gave up a run, and found out the next day that he had a partially torn ligament in his elbow. He’ll undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery tomorrow.
Scott Rice, LHP--The lefty specialist racked up an 18.00 ERA over his first three outings of the year, and that doesn't include the run he walked in on four pitches on Opening Day.
Carlos Torres, RHP--It was a bit of a rough start for Torres, who issued a four-pitch walk to the only batter he faced on Opening Day and ended the week with a 4.50 ERA.
Jose Valverde, RHP--In three outings totaling 3⅓ innings, Valverde has six strikeouts, one walk, and a 0.00 ERA. That’s 16.2 strikeouts and 2.7 walks per nine innings, respectively, and, of course, totally sustainable.
Zack Wheeler, RHP--The first pitcher meter of the season ends as it began: with a quality start. Like Colon, Wheeler gave up three runs in exactly six innings. His six strikeouts and two walks in the outing were good signs, though.
