FRESNO 8, LAS VEGAS 6 (Box)
With a five-run lead in the top of the ninth, everything was going according to plan: Starter Jacob deGrom followed Rafael Montero's strong debut with a very solid start of his own. The lineup full of sluggers slugged. The veteran relievers did their thing. And then the Grizzlies scored seven runs in the frame and stole victory from the hands of a pair of troublesome relief prospects. Specifically, Josh Edgin is really struggling to get back to the promising young lefty the Mets saw a couple seasons back.

A solid 2014 debut from starter Rainy Lara coupled with some very timely hitting from the club'a A lineup -- 3-for-7 with runners in scoring position, including a couple of doubles -- were enough for the B-Mets to pull out their first win of the seas in this seven-inning, double header-shortened affair.

Game 2: AKRON 3, BINGHAMTON 0 (Box)
Boring team was boring in this 3-0 defeat to the RubberDucks. With their two best players out of the lineup the offensive attack was relatively punchless while the pitching staff was so-so. Specifically, after missing most of 2013 with shoulder woes 2011 fourth-rounder Tyler Pill wasn't sharp in his first start back. On the other hand, old guy duo of Church and Velasquez were quite solid in relief. Could be a long season in Binghamton.

- RHP John Church: 2 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 0 BB, 3 K; After posting a 3.21 ERA in 23 appearances at Triple-A in 2013, the 27-year-old Church shouldn't have too many issues back in Bingo.
- LHP Jon Velasquez: 1 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 0 BB, 1 K; 28-year-old Rule 5 selection from the Phillies, originally from the Bronx.
Advanced-A - St. Lucie Mets (1-2)________________________________________
ST. LUCIE 3, PALM BEACH 8 (Box)
Top prospect Michael Fulmer took the li'l Mets out of this one early, surrendering three in the first on a home run and then four more in the fourth. Reports from the game had Fulmer's fastball and slider looking very erratic. It's fair to presume that after losing most of his 2013 campaign to injury, Fulmer may have some rust to shake off early this season. Otherwise the St. Lucie lineup didn't do all that much, aside from a Gilbert Gomez solo job in the third. It must be pointed out that there's a very healthy amount of swing-and-miss in this lineup.

Class-A -Savannah Sand Gnats(1-2)__________________________________
LAKEWOOD 6, SAVANNAH 3 (Box)
Despite an early home run from switch-hitting outfielder Victor Cruzado to put them ahead, another tough pitching performance from a promising, young righty doomed the Gnats in this one. 19-year-old starter Chris Flexen allowed five earned in just under five innings last night, falling behind most of the batters he faced and featuring a strike percentage just over 50%. The Gnats rallied to get the winning run to the plate in the ninth; however, Friday's hero Patrick Biondi hit a hard line out directly at the third baseman to end it.

- RF Victor Cruzado: 1-4, HR(1), K, BB; The AA Audio bump strikes again!
- CF Patrick Biondi: 0-4, 2 K
- 3B Jeff McNeil: 2-4, 2B; The 2013 13th-rounder out of Long Beach State has got the chops to play a strong short, but don't expect to see him there much this season.
- RHP Chris Flexen: 4.2 IP, 5 H, 5 ER, 3 BB, 3 K
- LHP John Mincone: 3 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 0 BB, 1 K; The Long Island native posted a 1.47 ERA in in 14 appearances for the Cyclones in 2013...and apparently he enjoys golf and fishing.

Let's go with Las Vegas starter Jacob deGrom, whose six very strong innings remind us that it's not just Syndergaard and Montero biding their time in Triple-A.
Goat of the Night
Josh Edgin certainly has looked lost in 2014. First it was his very poor spring training showing and now he seems to be carrying that bad mojo into the regular season. Looks like the big club will have to start looking outside the organization for some additional major league LOOGY depth.
