Kipnis is the third Indians player this year to receive a contract extension along with Michael Brantley (4 yrs. $25 million) and Yan Gomes (6 yrs. $23 million). The Kipnis extension is six years for $52.5 million with a club option year.
Archer finished third in the AL ROY voting in 2013 by posting a 3.22 ERA in 23 starts. The Rays gave Archer $25.5 million for six years with two club option years.
Don Baylor breaks his leg receiving first pitch
The new hitting coach of the Angels was receiving the ceremonial first pitch from Vladimir Guerrero, who signed a one-day contract to officially retire with the team, and his right leg just collapsed underneath him. He underwent successful surgery on Tuesday.
Rangers fans trash statue of deceased fan
I'm fairly certain that the fans leaving the trash around the statue didn't do it out of spite, but leaving it out in the open just makes them look lazy and inconsiderate.
Bruce Bochy spends challenge on a pickoff, regrets it later
This is one of the inherent risks of the current challenge system. Bochy contested that Matt Cain picked off A.J. Pollock at first base in the fourth inning; when the ruling was upheld, he couldn't challenge what happened soon thereafter. Pollock raced home on a passed ball and scored the tying run…at least that's the ruling. Replays showed Pollock's foot graze Cain's glove as he approached the plate, but since Bochy used up his challenge, he couldn't do anything about it except argue with the umpire. (video link)
Bobby Parnell may require elbow surgery
One day into the season, and the Mets are already considering having to use Jose Valverde. The tear is in the thick part of the MCL, so Parnell will have a platelet injection and make a decision on surgery in two weeks.
