No structural damage was found after Mejia was struck by a line drive.
The Mets have announced that X-rays taken on Jenrry Mejia's right arm came back negative. Mejia was struck by a Ryan Goins line drive in the 5th inning of yesterday's game, and was immediately taken out and brought to a local hospital for imaging. The X-rays revealed only inflammation.
The injury appeared to come at a bad time for Mejia, who was still competing for the fifth starter's job. Terry Collins and Sandy Alderson met this morning in Montreal to make a decision, in anticipation of having to submit rosters by tomorrow at 3pm. The Mets management apparently decided that the injury would not hamper Mejia, as he was announced as the club's fifth starter going into Opening Week.
Mejia was, by far, the top choice of most Mets fans going into spring training. He certainly has the best "stuff" of the Mets pitchers who were under consideration, but injuries have hampered Mejia over the past several years. It remains to be seen if Mejia will finally be able to pitch a full season.
