The team could target one of a few pitchers.
The Mets could still look to add a "closer-type" relief pitcher after adding Kyle Farnsworth, according to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York. Rubin's source says the team has allocated money for such a signing, and its top target is Fernando Rodney, who was recently connected to the Mets in rumors.
The team made a substantial offer to Grant Balfour a couple weeks ago, but he chose to sign with the Tampa Bay Rays. Three other pitchers are mentioned as potential targets in the report: Joel Hanrahan, Kevin Gregg, and Ryan Madson.
Hanrahan is recovering from Tommy John surgery but was a very good pitcher before that. The Mets were linked to Gregg, who had a 3.48 ERA and 4.10 FIP with the Cubs last year, back in early December. Madson hasn't throw a pitch in the big leagues in 2011, but if his arm proves healthy enough to pitch, perhaps he can regain his excellent form.
