The veteran pitcher will earn $1.5 million if he plays in the majors.

If Daisuke Matsuzaka is on the Mets' major league roster, he will earn $1.5 million this season, per Jon Heyman. The team announced that they signed the 33-year-old pitcher to a minor league deal earlier today. Matsuzaka made seven starts for the Mets last year after spending most of the season with Cleveland's Triple-A affiliate.

A minor league deal is a far cry from the big contract Matsuzaka signed when he first came to Major League Baseball with the Red Sox in 2007, but he's had just one great season in his seven years in the league. Like John Lannan, Matsuzaka provides starting pitching depth for the team. There's a decent chance that he will not crack the major league roster.

As currently constituted, the Mets' depth chart for starters probably looks something like this:

  1. Bartolo Colon
  2. Jon Niese
  3. Zack Wheeler
  4. Dillon Gee
  5. Jenrry Mejia
  6. John Lannan
  7. Carlos Torres
  8. Daisuke Matsuzaka
  9. Rafael Montero
  10. Noah Syndergaard
  11. Jacob deGrom
Lannan and Matsuzaka only figure to drop on that list once the Mets gain an extra year of control on Montero, Syndergaard, and deGrom at the end of April or after the Super Two cutoff date has passed.
