Mets, Eric Young Jr. avoid arbitration, agree to one-year, $1.85 million deal

The speedy outfielder has come to terms with the team.

The Mets and outfielder Eric Young Jr. have agreed to one-year, $1.85 million contract and avoided arbitration, according to Joel Sherman. The Mets acquired Young last year in exchange for right-handed pitcher Collin McHugh, a move that worked out fairly well for New York.

Young hit .251/.318/.329 with the Mets, which translated to just a .290 wOBA and 85 wRC+, but stole 38 bases and was caught just seven times. With passable defense by the metrics, he was worth 1.7 fWAR with the Mets last year. He's not likely to play a starting role on the 2014 roster, which is ideal, and could easily be worth his relatively small contract.

Last night, the Mets avoided arbitration with Ruben Tejada, and earlier today, they did so with Ike Davis. None of the news is unexpected.
