Ike Davis and the Mets agreed to a one year deal worth $3.5 million, avoiding salary arbitration.
After avoiding arbitration with shortstop Ruben Tejada last night, the Mets have agreed to a one-year deal with first baseman Ike Davis tonight, according to Joel Sherman. The deal is worth $3.5 million, a $375,000 raise from his $3.125 million 2013 salary. Davis hit 32 home runs in 2012 and looked primed for a big year in 2013. That was not meant to be, though, as he got off to another awful start and only hit .205/.326/.334 for the season before succumbing to an oblique injury in late August.
It's been rumored all offseason that the Mets are looking to trade Davis and while a deal has yet to happen, there still is time for the Mets to move him. The biggest obstacle, however, is the fact that teams in need of first basemen are finding other options. The Brewers have reportedly signed first baseman Mark Reynolds to a minor league deal tonight, a move which seems likely to take them out of contention. The Pirates' interest also seems to have waned after they acquired first baseman Chris McGuiness from Texas. With those two teams looking to be out of the running and the Orioles not willing to budge on the price, the odds of Davis getting moved could be slim.
