Mets Daily Farm Report - 6/25/13: Ike bombards SLC, Goeddel sharp for Bingo

SALT LAKE 5, LAS VEGAS 6 (Box)

Ike Davis went deep again and Wilmer Flores drove in three runs as Vegas beat Salt Lake 6-5. The home run was Ike's fifth in his last four games. In 58 plate appearances, he is now batting .333/.483/.778 and I'm starting to pick up what he's putting down. At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if Ike rejoined the big league club any day now, and I say this as someone who was sarcastically applauding his first two homer effort last week. What he's done recently out in AAA is not something the Ike who was sent down was capable of doing. Something has to be different.

The journeyman has been at it since 1995. In the ensuing decade, he's compiled a 3.71 ERA throughout the minors, independent leagues, and even the Nippon Pro Baseball League. He has never appeared in a major league game.

AA -Binghamton Mets (47-28)_____________________________________

BINGHAMTON 3, PORTLAND 0 (Box)

The B-Mets shut-out Portland Monday night behind a strong outing from Erik Goeddel, who went seven innings, striking out seven and walking one. Cesar Puello led the way offensively, and what he's been doing is so ridiculous that I thought I would play around with some arbitrary end-points on Baseball-Reference. The problem is, Puello's been so good all season that's it's hard to find a period that stands out above the rest. One thing that stood out a bit is that as the season has gone on, his strikeouts have decreased a bit while his power has ticked up. For example, since May 7th, Puello has slugged just over .700 while striking out under 18% of the time. The point is, Puello's been consistently awesome all year and has probably punched his ticket to Vegas following the AA all-star game on July 10th. Unless he's promoted tomorrow, which wouldn't surprise me either.

BRADENTON 6, ST LUCIE 4 (Box)

Dustin Lawley smacked a game-tying 2-run homer in the bottom of the 8th which only served to prolong the inevitable as St. Lucie eventually fell in extra innings. The home run for Lawley was his 15th of the season and one of four hits for him on the night. Lawley--a 19th round pick in the 2011 draft--has shown some serious pop this season. His average and on-base percentage are bogged down by a comically low BABIP, which is either indicative of him making lots of weak contact or just being horribly unlucky. If minorleaguecentral.com is to be trusted, his 10.4% line drive percentage leads me to believe it's more of the former.

SAVANNAH 2, AUGUSTA 3 (Box)

The Savannah offense continued to struggle since the promotion of their best two bats as they lost to Augusta 3-2. Ironically, the one bat that is not struggling belongs to Phillip Evans, who had his 5th multi-hit game in his last 10 during which he's hit .364/.436/.485 with just five strikeouts in 37 plate appearances. Brandon Nimmo's bat continues to struggle, striking out twice in four plate appearances. Nimmo has now struck out in 16 of his last 45 trips to bat.

Gavin Cecchini hit a sacrifice fly to drive in the winning run for Brooklyn Monday night as they won a low scoring affair 3-2. Not much else to report here as we're still dealing with extremely small sample sizes. Although, it does appear that Patrick Biondi is quite fast--he stole his third base of the season.

Star of the Night

Dustin Lawley deserves the star for his 4-for-6 night. Lawley has hit .245/.300/.516 this season over 277 at-bats. He's also mashing lefties to the tune of .297/.342/.622.

Honorable Mentions go out to Erik Goeddel, Jeff Walters, Cesar Puello, Chris Flexen, Jeff Diehl, and Ike too, I suppose. I must point out that I'm interested to see what the trio of Flexen, Taylor, and Gsellman will look like at year's end.
