Final Score: Mets 7, Cubs 3—A win made easier by Vic Black

The Mets beat the Cubs again this evening in Queens.

For the second straight night, the Mets beat the Cubs. Jon Niese gave up three runs in six-plus innings, though his line could have looked a lot worse if Vic Black hadn’t prevented Chicago from scoring after taking over with the bases loaded and nobody out in the seventh.

At the plate, things went well for the Mets, who scored three runs in the third on a Juan Lagares automatic double and a two-run single by Wilmer Flores. They scored four more times in the sixth on a mix of hits and Cubs mistakes. The only downside of the frame was that David Wright was hit by a pitch in the left shoulder and left the game after the half-inning was over.

After Black’s excellent outing, the Mets turned to Jeurys Familia and Buddy Carlyle, each of whom tossed a scoreless inning, to complete the win.

Mets vs. Cubs Recap: Mets build big lead, avoid losing it

Jon Niese ran into some trouble late in his start, but the Mets' bullpen bailed him out as the team beat the Cubs for the second time in as many nights.

The Mets might not be a great team this year, but they have had no problem taking care of business against the worst of the worst of Major League Baseball lately. While the Cubs have a slew of highly-touted young position players, the team clearly isn’t competitive yet, and it looked that way as the Mets beat them again on Saturday night.

Jon Niese put up a couple of zeroes to start his night, and the Mets jumped out to an early lead against Dan Straily in the bottom of the second. Lucas Duda walked, and Travis d’Arnaud grounded into a force out at second but reached first safely as the Cubs attempted to turn two. Matt den Dekker singled, and Juan Lagares hit a fly ball that bounced over the fence in right-center field to score d’Arnaud and move den Dekker to third. And Wilmer Flores followed up with a hard single to left-center field to score both baserunners to give the Mets a three-run lead.

Niese cruised through the third and worked around a bit of trouble in the fourth, but he gave up his first run of the night on a leadoff home run off the bat of Welington Castillo. But he retired the next three batters he faced, which made the home run seem like a minor hiccup in an otherwise encouraging start. And after he tossed a perfect sixth, the Mets extended their lead.

After Daniel Murphy grounded out to start the inning, Straily hit the back of David Wright’s left shoulder with a pitch. Wright stayed in the game to run the bases but left shortly thereafter. Straily then walked Lucas Duda and gave up a single to d’Aranud to load the bases. Matt den Dekker drew a walk to plate the Mets’ fourth run of the evening, and Juan Lagares hit a fly ball to right-center field—not nearly as deep as his double earlier in the game—that Cubs center fielder Arismendy Alcantra got just a piece of with his glove but was unable to catch. Two runs came home on the error.

The Cubs opted to intentionally walk Flores to bring up Niese, who hit a ground ball to first baseman Anthony Rizzo. The slugger decided to step on first base before throwing home, and den Dekker made a great slide to get around the tag at the plate and score. Curtis Granderson grounded out to end the inning, but the Mets’ 7-1 lead proved to be enough.

Niese gave up a solo home run to Justin Ruggiano to begin the seventh inning. He then gave up three straight singles before giving up a fourth on a ball that came back and hit his forearm. With that, the Cubs had cut the Mets’ lead to four and still had the bases loaded with nobody out.

Terry Collins called upon Vic Black, who managed to retire all three batters he faced—Chris Coghlan on a fly ball to left and Javier Baez and Anthony Rizzo on pop-ups—without allowing any of the runners he inherited to score.

Things were much quieter from there, as the Mets didn’t score again, and Jeurys Familia and Buddy Carlyle pitched the eighth and ninth, respectively, without issue.

Mets Morning News: Another victory, deGrom feeling good, Montero might be back in minors soon

$

0

Your Sunday morning dose of Mets and Major League Baseball news, notes, and links.

The Mets beat the Cubs again last night, jumping out to an early lead and eventually leading by six before things got a little dicey. Jon Niese wound up giving up three runs in six-plus innings but left the bases loaded with nobody out in the seventh for Vic Black, who quickly cleaned up the mess without allowing a run to score. With that, the Mets sit six games back of the second Wild Card spot in the National League despite a 59-65 record on the season. They trail Marlins, who are three-and-a-half games out, by two-and-a-half games.

Rafael Montero gets the start today for the Mets, though it sounds like he could be bound for Vegas soon. The 23-year-old struggled in first start back in the big leagues last week.

The downside of last night's victory was that David Wright was hit in his left shoulder—the same one that bothered him earlier this year and might have still been bothering him lately—and will probably miss today's game, at least.

Vic Black has been so good with runners on base that Terry Collins says—presumably half-jokingly—that he'd consider bringing Black in only when runners are on.

Daisuke Matsuzaka will likely get another minor league start before he's ready to be activated from the disabled list, presumably as a relief pitcher.

Speaking of injured Mets pitchers, Jacob deGrom is feeling pretty, pretty good after throwing from flat ground yesterday. He's set to throw a bullpen today and could be back right when his disabled list stint is over.

The Mets are understandably concerned about Travis d'Arnaud getting banged up behind home plate. He seems to have been a magnet for foul tips and backswings lately.

John Harper thinks the Mets and Cubs match up perfectly for a TRAID. One of the Mets' trade targets could be youngster Javier Baez, who has the MLB logo tattooed on the back of his neck and is trying to adjust to the big leagues now.

Mets Trade Rumors: Could Syndergaard net Russell or Baez from Cubs?

$
0
0

If the Mets are to trade for a shortstop before next season, the Cubs seem like a good match.

The Mets and Cubs match up well for a trade this winter, says John Harper of the Daily News. Harper writes that the Cubs are high on Noah Syndergaard, the Mets' top pitching prospect, and that the Mets are high on Cubs shortstop prospect Addison Russell. Chicago recently acquired Russell from the A's in the trade that sent Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel to the American League's best team.

The Cubs have an overflow of young middle infielders, with Starlin Castro the oldest of the bunch. Javier Baez, who was called up recently, was almost exclusively a shortstop in the minors but got a little time at second base this year, too, and is playing there in the big leagues with Castro at short. Russell only adds to the potential logjam for the Cubs.

Across High-A and Double-A this year, the 20-year-old Russell has hit .297/.366/.485. The Mets are still reportedly inclined to hold on to their top young pitching talent, but Harper writes that they might be willing to trade Syndergaard for a player like Russell or Baez.

Syndergaard, acquired with Travis d'Arnaud and Wuilmer Becerra in the R.A. Dickey trade after the 2012 season, is still just 21 years old and has a 4.76 ERA and 3.78 FIP pitching for the Mets' Triple-A affiliate in Las Vegas.

If you were Sandy Alderson, would you trade Noah Syndergaard for Addison Russell straight up?

The Mets look for their third straight win over the Cubs.

Here's the Cubs' problem over the current three-game losing streak in the proverbial nutshell.

Cubs pitchers have issued 16 walks over those three games. Seven of those batters who walked eventually scored. You just can't keep doing that and win games. The Cubs had been pretty good with this for the first 12 games of August -- 24 total walks over those 12 games, just two per game. But the walkathon that's happened over the last three has made the Cubs staff edge up toward the top of the worst-walking staffs in the National League. They've now walked 394 hitters, fourth-most in the league, just three behind the Phillies and seven fewer than the Mets. The Rockies lead the league with 411.

Control is important, obviously. This pitching staff has some work to do in that regard.

Here are today's particulars.

Coghlan LF, Baez 2B, Rizzo 1B, Castro SS, Valbuena 3B, Alcantara CF, Sweeney RF, Baker C, Arrieta P

vs. Cubs

After a rough patch through July and early August, Jake Arrieta returned to his earlier form in his last start (7⅓ innings, five hits, two runs). He faced the Mets June 3 at Wrigley Field. It was not his finest hour -- he didn't make it out of the fifth inning and gave up seven hits and three walks. It was after that start that he seemed to "figure it out" and went on his great run through June. Hopefully, the last outing is the beginning of another such run.

The Cubs were rumored to be interested in acquiring Rafael Montero from the Mets earlier this year. He made four starts for the Mets in May, was returned to Triple-A, and has recently been recalled again. Five days ago he allowed seven hits and five runs in five innings to the Nationals, including three home runs. That'd work for me. He has never faced the Cubs nor anyone on the active Cubs roster.

Today's game is on CSN Chicago.

Cubs 2, Mets 1: Javier Baez Walks! (And Jake Arrieta Dominates)

$
0
0

Ball one, ball two, ball three, ball four. It happened! The Cubs' top righthander had another excellent outing, and Starlin Castro saved the day.

See, Javy? We knew you could do it!

After 54 major-league at-bats, including his first one Sunday, Javier Baez drew a walk, his first in the big leagues. No, the ball has not been sent to the Hall of Fame. The best news about this base on balls is that after two groundouts advanced Baez to second base, a single by Luis Valbuena scored him.

That lead held until the eighth inning, when a single by Ruben Tejada, a passed ball and a Curtis Granderson single off Pedro Strop tied the game.

Fortunately, Starlin Castro came to the rescue with his 13th homer of the season, one short of his career high, and Hector Rondon (17th save) finished up uneventfully and the Cubscompleted a satisfying 2-1 win over the Mets.

Before Castro's homer, Baez went one better on his first free pass in the top of the eighth inning off Mets reliever Carlos Torres. He checked his swing on a 3-2 pitch that was ruled not a swing by plate umpire Will Little. The pitch was out of the strike zone, thus called ball four. Two walks in one game! Let's hope Baez does this again. He'll need to show opposing pitchers that he's willing to do this in order to get better pitches to hit.

The other story of this game was Jake Arrieta, who again showed the form that had him dominating teams in June and early July. Arrieta threw seven shutout innings, allowing two singles and a walk and striking out nine. Arrieta's curveball was outstanding all afternoon, freezing hitters on both sides of the plate. It's possible that Arrieta might get shut down late in the season, but for now, he still looks strong; this outing was almost effortless and he probably could have gone another inning. I usually am in favor of starting pitchers who look as dominant as this being allowed to go longer; in this case, if it saves Arrieta for starts later in the year and allows him to finish strong, it was a good idea to pull him after seven.

Matt Szczur made his major-league debut as a pinch-runner in the seventh, for Ryan Sweeney, who had singled. Szczur became the seventh Cub to make his major-league debut this year and I hope he'll get opportunities to start over the next few weeks. While he might never become a star, or even a regular starter, he's got skills that could make him a useful fourth or fifth outfielder going forward. He remained in the game in right field and hopefully will be in the starting lineup soon.

Apart from the run, the Cubs couldn't do much with Rafael Montero, who was considered one of the top Mets pitching prospects earlier this year and whom the Cubs scouted as a possible trade acquisition as far back as spring training. The Cubs had just four singles off Montero, but fortunately, got the game-winning homer from Castro.

This win continued the Cubs' odd pattern of winning games televised on CSN Chicago, while losing the WGN-TV games. I realize it's strictly coincidence; the players certainly don't care, nor probably even know, what channel the game is on. But, through Sunday's game, the Cubs are 31-28 on CSN, 21-34 on WGN (and 1-8 on other channels). Weird.

This quirky little four-game road trip will have its ending begin before your lunch hour likely even starts at work Monday -- an 11:10 a.m. CT start, with Kyle Hendricks facing Bartolo Colon. Colon has the best walk rate for any National League pitcher, 1.2 per nine innings, so it'll be a challenge for Javy to do it again.

Final Score: Cubs 2, Mets 1—Well that was painful

$

The Mets looked like they may nab a late come from behind win but they were unable to do so and lost game three of their four game series.

The Mets lost a tough one today by a score of 2-1 as they were unable to keep the hopes of a sweep alive against the Chicago Cubs. The Mets will look to rebound and try to emerge victorious in this series with another afternoon game tomorrow.

Rafael Montero pitched a fantastic ballgame but the Mets ran into a buzz saw today in the form of Jake Arrieta and managed just two hits against him and zero runs in his seven innings of dazzling work. Montero was almost his equal today, but allowed a run in the fourth off a Luis Valbuena RBI single.

The Mets sat on zero runs until Arrieta departed and they were able to get one back against the Cubs set-up man Pedro Strop in the eighth inning. Curtis Granderson singled home pinch-runner Eric Young from second base to tie the game up. The tie was short-lived as Jenrry Mejia gave up a solo-shot to the first batter he faced in the ninth, Starlin Castro, and that was that. Cubs closer Hector Rondon came in to retire the Mets in order and seal it for the away team.

Mets vs. Cubs Recap: So close yet so far

$
0
0

After tying the game late, the Mets were unable to strike last and fell to the Chicago Cubs in a low-scoring affair.

There was an interesting pitching matchup on the menu today at Citi Field with Rafael Montero, still searching for his first big league win, opposite Jake Arrieta, in the midst of a tremendous campaign and looking for more of the same. Both pitchers were outstanding, but it was the bullpen which played the decisive role in this one that saw the Cubs come out ahead of the Mets by a final score of  2-1.

The Mets lineup was significantly altered for today's matinee. David Wright took a pitch off the shoulder last night and was given what will hopefully be no more than a maintenance day with Eric Campbell replacing him at the hot corner. Wilmer Flores, who had started the previous ten games, got a rest with Ruben Tejada filling in for him at shortstop. Travis d'Arnaud also received a day off today giving backup catcher Anthony Recker a start. Terry Collins decided to move Murphy out of his customary two-hole into the third spot and rewarded Juan Lagares for his recent resurgence at the plate and moving him up in the order to second. The Mets were fielding several second choice players and it did them no service today against Jake Arrieta who was at his absolute best.

The Mets saw Arrieta once before this season, back in their early June visit to Wrigley Field. They really made him labor and chased him from the game before the fifth inning came to a close, but were only able to plate a single run against him on that day. That was one more run than they could manage off of him today, however. Arrieta completely shut down the Mets lineup in his seven innings of work. He had all of his stuff working, especially his curveball that was especially devastating against the Mets hitters. He allowed just two singles, two walks, no runs, and tallied nine strikeouts. Arrieta struck out the side in the second and fourth innings and looked the business all afternoon. With his disastrous tenure as a Baltimore Oriole firmly in his rear view mirror, he continues to revitalize his career as a Cub.

The Mets best run scoring opportunity against Arrieta came in the third inning and it looked as though they were going to make the Cubs pay after some shaky defense. Tejada led off the third inning by lining a single into center field. Tejada then advanced to second after a passed ball, but Montero was unable to advance him to third as he popped up his sacrifice bunt attempt to the catcher. Curtis Granderson then hit a grounder straight to Anthony Rizzo, but Rizzo casually threw to a covering Arrieta and it went astray, and earned himself his ninth error of the year. With runners on the corners and one out, Juan Lagares hit a sharp ground ball up the middle but Starlin Castro, who was both a thorn in the Mets side and the dagger in their hearts today, was there with a very slick backhanded grab and flick on to start the double play allowing Arrieta to wriggle out of the jam keeping the game tied at zero.

The Cubs got on the board with a run in the fourth as it was Montero who blinked first. Javier Baez drew his first major league walk and was able to advance to second base after a one out nubber out over the plate by Castro. With two outs, Luis Valbuena, who entered today on a 1 for 34 skid, lined a base hit to right field which allowed Baez to score from second easily. Montero then got Arismendy Alcantara to ground out to end the inning. This would be the only run allowed from Montero on the day.

There were some very encouraging signs out of the young Montero today. He entered the game with an ERA of 6.12 and lowered it over a full point to 5.01 when Terry Collins took the ball from him in the eighth inning. His fastball velocity was sitting mostly in the 90-92 range instead of the 93-94 range which he exhibited in recent games which tells us that he is starting to feel more comfortable at the big league level. He trusted his stuff today and worked all over the strike zone. He was able to mix in the entirety of his repertoire very nicely against Chicago. He exuded confidence on the hill today and was calm, composed, and poised throughout the afternoon. He pitched well enough to earn his first win, and although it did not come to fruition for the young man, it was a very positive sign and hopefully something he will build upon heading into the stretch run. His final line: seven and one third innings, five hits (all singles), one earned run, two walks, and six strikeouts.

In the eighth inning the Cubs threatened to put the game out of reach, but the Mets bullpen did a wonderful job to keep the Cubs run total at one. Ryan Sweeney led off the inning with a single and was then pitch-run for rookie Matt 'Scrabble' Szczur. Montero got Jeff Baker to ground out, but in doing so, advanced Szczur to second base. Justin Ruggiano then pinch hit for Arrieta and earned a base on balls against Montero. With his pitch count over 100 at this point, Collins turned to Josh Edgin to face the lefty Chris Coghlan. Edgin did his job and struck out Ruggiano allowing Collins to continue to play the matchups and call upon Carlos Torres to face the right-handed Baez. Torres' very first pitch of the afternoon was a wild pitch which ran all the way to the backstop allowing both runners to advance into scoring position. With first base open, Baez drew his second walk of the game and loaded the bases bringing Rizzo up with the bases loaded. Torres dug deep, however, and rebounded with a few terrific pitches against Rizzo and got him to strikeout to end the inning. The bullpen picked Montero up with a couple of huge strikeouts and kept the Mets in the game still down just a run.

With Arrieta being pinch-hit for and finally out of the game, the Mets were able to tie up the game at one against the Cubs set-up man, Pedro Strop. Ruben Tejada managed a one out single and was pinch-run for by Eric Young. Kirk Niewenhuis, up after being put in the previous inning for Matt den Dekker on a double switch, hit a line drive to center field but saw his effort neutralized by a diving catch from Alcantara. With Granderson up at the plate Baker allowed a passed ball, and critically put Young into scoring position. After running the count full, the ice-cold Granderson delivered huge with an RBI hit into right-center field. Lagares grounded out to Castro to end the inning but the Mets finally broke through with a new lease on life.

After enjoying the tie for about three minutes, Castro led off the top of the ninth with an opposite field solo shot off of Jenrry Mejia who has fallen on some hard times recently. The Mets worked hard in the eighth to eek out that tying run and looked to shift the momentum in their favor but they were quickly deflated by the visitors. Mejia was able to get out of the inning without allowing another run but the damage was already done.

Mejia has now allowed runs in four of his eight August appearances and whether or not his recent struggles can be blamed towards the injury he is pitching through, it is a shame to see his marvelous season unravel here in August.

With the save situation back intact allowing Rick Renteria to turn to his fireballing closer Hector Rondon. Rondon came in and made quick work of the Mets in the bottom of the ninth retiring each three batters he faced in order to cue the handshake line.

It was an extremely disappointing end to the game as the Mets issued such a sense of false hope after tying it up in the eighth. The Mets were able to put a runner in scoring position on just two occasions all afternoon and did not hit an extra base hit on the afternoon. Their offense has once again fallen asleep. This marks the fourth game in a row where they have totaled just four hits and today they were not as fortunate as they had been in games one and two. The Mets will trot out Bartolo Colon to face Cubs rookie Kyle Hendricks tomorrow afternoon as they look to take three games out of four against Chicago.

Meet the Mets

Rafael Montero had a terrific outing against the Cubs on Sunday, but Jake Arrieta was a little better, shutting out the Mets through seven innings. New York finally caught up to Chicago via a Curtis Granderson RBI single in the bottom of the eighth, but Starlin Castro hit a solo home run in the top of the ninth off of Jenrry Mejia to win it for the visitors, 2-1.

It was the Mets' fourth straight game with four hits or fewer.

With Jacob deGrom set to return from the disabled list this week, Montero's Sunday start may have been his last in the majors for a while.

David Wright sat out yesterday's game after being hit on the left shoulder with a pitch on Saturday night. It was the same shoulder that Wright sat out with earlier in the season, and Terry Collins says that Wright could miss more time.

The Mets/Cubs trade rumors started buzzing again when John Harper reported that Chicago is interested in Noah "Thor" Syndergaard.

Joel Sherman also wonders why the Cubs and Mets haven't made a deal already. An anonymous executive tells Sherman that the Mets are being stingy with their pitching prospects.

The Braves kept pace by completing a sweep of the suddenly slumping Athletics.

Also during an eventful day in Denver, the Rockies retired Todd Helton's number 17 jersey. Here's the video message from Helton that played at Coors Field on Sunday.

There may have been more Derek Jeter fans than Rays fans at Tropicana Field this weekend.

Noah Syndergaard: on the trade market for a Cubs shortstop?

Here's some early Hot Stove prospect trade speculation: John Harper at the New York Daily News reported this weekend that the New York Mets and the Chicago Cubs look like natural trade partners. The Mets want a young shortstop, the Cubs want young pitching, and it doesn't take a genius to see that a match could be possible given what each organization has in the farm system.

The Cubs are rumored to be very interested in Noah Syndergaard, while the Mets covet Addison Russell or Javier Baez. Starlin Castro could also be a trade possibility, although according to Harper the Mets would not give up Syndergaard for Castro, who is older than Russell and Baez and doesn't have the same kind of impact bat. That doesn't mean something else couldn't be worked out for a Castro trade of course.

So let's play armchair GM and discuss these options.

A) Is Syndergaard for Russell a fair trade?
B) Is Syndergaard for Baez a fair trade?
C) Is Syndergaard for Castro a fair trade?
D) If you don't like C, put together a Mets prospect package that would be fair for Castro.
