The Sand Gnats' ownership group is making a push for a new stadium
If you're a follower of Mets prospects, you're probably aware of the Savannah Sand Gnats, the Mets' Low-A affiliate located in Savannah, Georgia. The Sand Gnats play in Historic Grayson Stadium, which is so cavernous it recently ranked as the most run-suppressing environment in all of minor league baseball. In addition to being a black hole for power, Grayson is really old. Built in 1926, it currently ranks as the third oldest ballpark in all of minor league baseball.
Well, prospect followers and recent draftees can rejoice. As Toby Hyde points out, the Savannah Morning News reports the Sand Gnat ownership group will lobby the Savannah City Council to help build the team a new stadium. If the city does not agree to help build a new stadium, the franchise appears ready to make a run at moving the team to Columbia, South Carolina when their contract with the city expires following next season.
The Mets' affiliation with the Sand Gnats began in 2007 and expires after next season, as well. Given this development, it seems likely the Mets' lowest-level full-season affiliate will begin the 2015 season playing in a new, less spacious stadium.
