Mets Rumors: Mets reportedly met with Bartolo Colon's agent

The Amazins met with the right-handed veteran's representation despite reportedly not being serious players for him.

Sweeny Murti of WFAN is reporting today that the Mets had a meeting with right-handed pitcher Bartolo Colon's agent. That makes sense because the Mets probably have many appointments with players and their agents during the Winter Meetings. It also makes sense because the Mets knew they would be in the mix for a free agent starting pitcher ever since they learned that Matt Harvey was going under the knife for Tommy John surgery.

Throwing cold water on the situation is Daily News reporter Andy Martino, who says that Colon is out of New York's price range. Although Colon turns 41 years old in May, he is coming off of a 190-inning season in which he struck out 117 batters, walked just 29, and pitched to a 2.65 ERA. That makes him worth at least $10 million on a one-year deal, with a possible discount in average annual value if someone wants to sign Colon for two seasons. The old man has thrown at least 150 innings in each of the past three seasons.

If Colon really is too expensive for the Mets, there are plenty of other options in the market, including Bronson Arroyo, Paul Maholm, Clayton Richard, and old friend Chris Capuano.
