Your Saturday morning dose of New York Mets and Major League Baseball news, notes, and links.
Meet the Mets
The Mets hopped back into the free agent pool yesterday, as they've signed outfielder Curtis Granderson to a four year contract reportedly worth $60 million. Heading into his age 33 season, Granderson is not the perfect free agent but, as Andy Martino writes, he's a good start. Of course, there needs to be more added this winter. Izzy Hechkoff wrote about Granderson's impact on the 2014 team. The most important reaction to the deal was David Wright's, who was thrilled that the team added the outfielder. But does this make the Mets a better team in 2014 and 2015, Greg Prince asks? I guess we'll find out.
Other reactions to the Granderson signing include those at Fangraphs and Baseball Prospectus. We also have a roundup of reactions. John Sickels has a Granderson Prospect Retrospective over at Minor League Ball. Finally, Around Citi passes along a great video of Curtis Granderson choosing his walk-up music.
Juan Lagares was back in New York to get his knee looked at. Luckily, the injury isn't serious and he'll rest for two weeks.
Around the Majors
Curtis Granderson's signing wasn't even the biggest news in New York yesterday, as Robinson Cano spurned the Yankees for rainy Seattle, accepting a ten year, $240 million contract from the Mariners.
The loss of Cano will definitely hurt the Yankees but they were able to land two more free agents in his stead, bringing back Hiroki Kuroda on a one year deal and then inking Mets fan's favorite Carlos Beltran to a three year, $45 million contract. Sigh.
The NationalsaddedNate McLouth on a two-year contract worth $10.75 million.
Mike Napoli is back with the Red Sox, signing a two year, $32 million contract.
The Astros and starter Scott Feldmanagreed to a 3 year, $30 million contract, the Rangers grabbed catcher J.P. Arencibia for $1.8 million and one year. The Marlins are close to signingGarrett Jones to a two year deal which could push first baseman Logan Morrison out the door in a trade. That seems like a silly move.
Finally, the Phillies are trying to trade Jonathan Papelbon because LOL.
