The Mets have shifted their attention from Nelson Cruz to Curtis Granderson.
After missing out on yesterday’s excitement, the Mets have "intensified" talks with free agent outfielder Curtis Granderson, according to Adam Rubin. Sources say the talks are revolving around a three-year deal for Granderson, who will be 33 on Opening Day, although the sticking point might be whether or not he can get a four-year offer—something the Mets might concede. The team has also "cooled" on signing Nelson Cruz, tweets Ken Rosenthal, further limiting the Mets potential outfield options.
Granderson turned down a qualifying offer from the Yankees, which means the Mets would forfeit their second-round pick to sign him. However, the draft pick compensation attached to the corner outfielder could also reduce his price.
Earlier in the offseason, Chris Strohmaier suggested that Granderson’s age and declining skills make him a less-than-ideal fit for the Mets. One early contract estimate from Andrew Marchand suggested Granderson could sign for between $50 and $60 million over four years.
Granderson doesn’t come without risks. In addition to his health and age, Granderson’s power numbers could take a hit going from Yankee Stadium to Citi Field. Those concerned about the latter might take some comfort knowing that all seven of Granderson’s 2013 home runs would have landed in Citi Field’s right field stands.
