The Mets have non-tendered the veteran relief pitcher and shortstop.
The Mets have decided not to tender a contract to shortstop Omar Quintanilla or relief pitcher Scott Atchison. Both players were arbitration-eligible, but as we noted in our roundup of the Mets' non-tender decisions yesterday, neither player's non-tender comes as a surprise. Eight other Mets players are arbitration-eligible: Daniel Murphy, Ike Davis, Dillon Gee, Bobby Parnell, Eric Young Jr., Lucas Duda, Ruben Tejada, and Justin Turner.
Quintanilla was the Mets’ shortstop for much of the 2013 season and hit 222/.306/.283 in the process. While Quintanilla struggled, the Mets do have a lack of depth at the shortstop position.
Atchison threw 45 innings in relief for the Mets in 2013. He posted a 4.37 ERA and 3.75 FIP, and he missed about a month because of bone spurs in his right elbow and another month because of a groin strain. But the Mets might still be interested in bring Atchison back next season.
MLB Trade Rumorsprojected that Atchison would receive a $1.3 million contract while Quintanilla would receive a $900,000 contract if they had been tendered.
