Haren joins a rotation featuring Clayton Kershaw, Zack Greinke, and Hyun-Jin Ryu.
The Los Angeles Dodgers have signed veteran right-handed pitcher Dan Haren to a one-year, $10 million contract, according to Ken Rosenthal. The deal also includes an option for 2015 that vests if Haren throws 180 innings next year, a benchmark of which he has fallen just short in each of the past two seasons.
For his career, Haren has a 3.74 ERA and 112 ERA+, numbers that don't look nearly as impressive as his peak. From the time he became a full-time major league starting pitcher—after the Cardinals traded him to the Athletics—in 2005 through 2011, Haren had a 3.49 ERA and 122 ERA+. He also threw at least 216 innings in each of those seasons, and a result, he posted 31.6 bWAR over that span. As his home run rate skyrocketed over the last two years, Haren really struggled to the tune of a 4.50 ERA and 85 ERA+.
While the Mets need starting pitching, they were never linked to Haren. His signing elsewhere isn't as disappointing as Josh Johnson's, but another name has come off the board as the Mets look to improve this winter. It's obviously also relevant that Haren has left the Washington Nationals, though the team still has a rotation that includes Stephen Strasburg, Jordan Zimmermann, and Gio Gonzalez.
