Your Sunday morning dose of New York Mets and Major League Baseball news, notes, and links.

Meet the Mets

Adam Rubin suggests that the Mets could be interested in recently DFA'd Padres outfielder Jaff Decker. The 23-year old was a first round pick by the Padres in 2008 while Sandy Alderson and Paul DePodesta worked for the team and he fits the mold of a player they'd like. Decker hit .286/.381/.443 with AAA Tucson in 2013 and is a .268/.402/.456 career minor league hitter. It wouldn't be a surprising pickup, said a certain Morning News writer four days ago.

Joel Sherman says that if the Mets can't afford to build their roster from the top down, they need to do it from the bottom up like the Rays and Athletics.

Around the Majors

The Yankees and catcher Brian McCannagreed to a 5 year deal worth $85 million. The deal could be worth 6/100 after a vesting option.

After dealing David Freese for Peter Bourjos, the Cardinals are close to signing shortstop Jhonny Peralta to what appears to be a four year contract. Good fit for the Cardinals, as they can afford it with Carlos Beltran off the books and it keeps their insane amount of organizational depth untouched.

Former Mets reliever Joe Smithagreed to a 3 year, $15 million contract with the Angels. First Jason Vargas, now Smith. Hey, at least we still have J.J. Putz...oh, no.

At SI.com, Jay Jaffe figures out how much Shin-Soo Choo is really worth and it's a lot more money than you think.

Robinson Cano may have secretly met with the Tigers, even though they have Ian Kinsler at second base now.

Yesterday At AA

The Mets wish you a safe and happy holiday season. A few nice player acquisitions would make it even happier, Mets.
