Tigers trade Prince Fielder to Rangers for Ian Kinsler

The teams have made a very surprising one-for-one swap.

The Texas Rangers have acquired Prince Fielder and $30 million from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for Ian Kinsler. It's a deal that seemingly came out of nowhere, to say the least.

Fielder still has seven years and $168 million left on his contract, though the Tigers' contribution in the trade lessens the total to $138 million—an average of $19.7 million per season. Kinsler has five years and $67 million remaining on his contract.

Fielder is a career .286/.389/.527 hitter with a 140 wRC+, and his numbers as a hitter figure to benefit from the move to the Ballpark in Arlington for half of his games. He's been a defensive liability at first base, of course. Kinsler is a career .273/.349/.454 hitter with a 111 wRC+ and plays at least average, if not good, defense at second base.

With the move, the Tigers will almost certainly move Miguel Cabrera from third base to first. Barring any further moves, the Rangers now have a spot for top prospect Jurickson Profar at second base opposite Elvis Andrus at shortstop. And the icing on the cake here is that Kinsler and Fielder once appeared in an ESPN commercial with Adam Scott and discussed trades involving themselves.
