Agent Jay-Z had dinner with the Mets GM, assistant GM and COO to discuss his client's free agency.
Jay-Z had dinner with high ranking Mets officials Monday night to discuss second baseman Robinson Cano's free agency, reports Ken Davidoff of the New York Post. Jay-Z, real name Shawn Carter, represents Cano through his agency, Roc Nation Sports.
Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said last week that he did not imagine the team could afford to sign another player to a $100 million deal — David Wright's extension, signed late last year, has seven seasons and $127 million left on it — which would certainly rule out Cano. However, Alderson was at the dinner alongside assistant GM John Ricco and COO Jeff Wilpon.
The meeting was initiated by Jay Z's group, making it hard to gauge the Mets actual interest. Had the team been the ones to set the meeting, it could be assumed that they were truly looking into Cano. The Yankees, whom Cano has played his entire career for, have yet to enter into any major contracts discussions with him yet, but are still favored to sign him.
Cano, 31, is the best second baseman in baseball right now and the top free agent on the market this year. He hit .314/.383/.516 with 27 home runs over 160 games in 2013 for the Yankees. He has been named an all-star, won a Silver Slugger, and finished in the top-six of MVP voting each of the last four years, and has also won two Gold Gloves over that time. At last word, he is still seeking over $300 million as a free agent.
