Meet the Mets

David Wright's return helped the Mets to jump out to a 3-0 first inning lead and Daisuke Matsuzaka was good enough over six innings, as the Mets defeated the Phillies 6-4.

Dillon Gee matches up with Tyler Cloyd tonight at Citizens Bank Park as the Mets and Phillies play game two of their three-game series.

Along with Wright's return, the Mets promoted shortstop Wilfredo Tovar from Double-A Binghamton yesterday. Toby Hyde wrote a little bit about the diminutive shortstop.

Wilmer Flores may get a start at second base on Sunday against Cliff Lee.

In the Daily News, John Harper writes that the Mets should look into trading for Rockies' shortstop Troy Tulowitzki if he becomes available. His injury history isn't great but this is a guy who's still been worth over 5 WAR in 5 of the last 7 seasons. He's easily the best shortstop in the game today and a guy they should make a play for if he's available.

The suspensions of Jordany Valdespin and Cesar Puello are nearing their end in the next few days.

Lucas Duda and Matt den Dekker may both be headed to Venezuela this winter to play some more ball.

Matt Eddy notes that Mets' minor league affiliates had the 4th best combined record of all big league organizations. That's nice to see.

Jordan Zimmermann tossed a complete game shutout as the Nationalsdefeated the Marlins 8-0. The Nats are now 5 games out of the second wild card with 8 left to play. Davey Johnson says he would've offered to step down as Nationals' manager if they hadn't gone on their recent hot streak. Bryce Harper is the second player ever to have two 20 homer seasons before turning 21. That's impressive.

The Braves scored four in the ninth to defeat the Cubs 9-5. Jason Heyward made his return from the broken jaw that Jon Niese gave him.

Around the Majors

The Red Sox defeated the Blue Jays to clinch the AL East title, their first since 2007.

Andy Pettitteannounced his retirement yesterday, effective at the end of the season. What are his qualifications for the Hall of Fame?
